Where is Lola Sayong Eco-Surf Camp?

Nestled in southernmost province in Luzon. Sorsogon is one of the provinces in Bicol Region (okay this is too bookish I know) they are located in Buenavista, Gubat, in Sorsogon.

How to Get There?

From Manila there are two options first is to fly to Legaspi, second take a bus.

Via Air

Take a flight to Legaspi and head straight to Legaspi terminal. Travel time may take up to an hour. From there look for any bus or van that goes to Sorsogon City, travel time may take up to two hours. From Sorsogon City, ask the driver to drop you to the terminal of jeepney going to Gubat travel time may take up to an hour. From the city proper there are tricycle that can take you to the camp, just say so. Fare is around 50 pesos and travel time may take up to 10 minutes or less.

Via Land

There are buses that has a daily trip directly to Gubat Sorsogon, travel time may take up to 15 hours. I know, butt-numbing but all worth it and it is much cheaper. Fare is around 920 pesos for one way. From Gubat you may ride a tricycle going to the camp, fare is around 50 pesos and travel time may take up to 10 minutes or less.
Cubao Terminal - DLTB, Elavil, Penafrancia, Raymond Bus
Pasay Terminal - PhilTranco Bus Line

Alternatively, if you miss a direct bus going to Sorsogon, you may ride any Legaspiz route bus and at the Legaspi terminal there are van and buses going to Sorsogon.

What kind of accommodation does they have?

If you are looking for any fancy aircon hotel type of accommodation they don't have it but if you are looking for more than that I can assure you this going to be you favorite spot too. They offer tent and nipa hut accommodation.

Their nipa hut cottages are made of bamboo and can accommodate from four to eight person. It has its own electricity, a linen, and a fan. The lower part of the cottage has enough space for sitting and just hanging out, you can also hang a hammock there. Price ranges from 800-1450 pesos.

They have tent rentals too that is good for one to two persons for only 200 pesos. They have a wide camping area perfect for the tents that is surrounded by trees.

You may bring your own tents and hammocks too.

Staying for just a day?

They also have open beach bungalows where you can hangout. Its a beachfront! Just bring your own food and you're good. They have a minimal fee of 25 pesos each for it.

Bathroom?

I think this is one of frequently asked questions, but I guess given the fact that this is a surf camp, you can not except much. But I assure you there is a bathroom and a shower rooms. All are communal btw but well and cleanly maintained.

Restaurant? Food? Beverages?

They have a kitchen that offers a great choices of foods. Meals ranges from 80-275 pesos.

The last time I've been there they stop selling liquors, there are however a mini store from the entrance you can buy beers and hard ones there.

I think you may cook your own food. Just ask them they are really accommodating.

Parking?

Yep and secured.

Surfing?

Definitely. As far as I know the surf lesson will cost you 350 pesos for an hour with instructor and a board. And I think that is the cheapest on all of the surf spot I've been to. Never get to surf though on my three visit. HAHA! I know. But the waves are good. :D

Other Activities?

You can explore the whole camp. There are detox place where you can have perfect solitude but comes with a rules you need to follow to maintain the place of course.

You can try exploring other landmarks near the place too. They offer daytour and some other activities. I happen to say no to all during my stay though because I really need to leave early morning the next day.

Because there is more to Sorsogon than the Ordinary.

I can't believe I am writing this just now, given my love to this place.

Kuya Noli, whom I didn't asked for his name until we've met face to face, was the person answering my queries on their facebook account and been texting and whose been replying to my every questions. Makulit talaga ako minsan, matanong, but that is because I am travelling alone, so I need if not all most of the essential details for my trip.

He told me to text him when I'm already at Sorsogon City and that he will picks me up at the town proper of Gubat. The camp is 10-15 minutes away or less. I'm coming from my solo backpacking in Catanduanes.

It is not my first time to go on solo travel but every place I've been to feels like solo traveling is new to me. Maybe because provinces are all different from each and people I meet are all different as well. But stepping on this little paradise feels a lot different far from the usual.

Honestly, the camp is not the first option on my list on where I'll stay for a night. I reconsider it because it is much cheaper and lies near the landmarks I will visit: the Barcelona and the Bulusan. You see, I only have overnight to visit those places so I need a better place to stay; an easy access to those places. To cut it short, my second option makes the best option. Not only I did discover a good place but I get to meet good people too.

When I step into the camp I got mesmerize by the ambiance, solitude is clearly there, but I was too busy thinking about the places I need to visit right away, for this stay happens to be just you know passing by and all and no intention of staying for long. But I was wrong. I actually neglect them for a while.

When my things are all nestled on one of the nipa huts in the camp I grab my small bag, put inside my camera, my notes, my wallet, and head straight to Bulusan. Funny but I didn't get to Bulusan Lake for some reason. Will narrate it on my Bulusan post.

I go out of the camp twice simply because I haven't got off at Barcelona the first time.

When I got back from Barcelona, I head to the beach sit on the corner and continue writing. I can see some other guests playing on the waves, do some surfing, some are talking with local surfers, there are dogs everywhere, one or two keep following me and sits beside me, I really don't mind a dog companion, really.

It was after I take a quick shower that I got hungry when I head to their kitchen and asked for food and that is the time where I was joined by other guests who are also traveling alone.

Joey(whom I constantly have communication as we speak) and the other Australian guy (okay I am not really sure, basta foreigner, I know, signs of ageing), they were the first solo traveler I met on this Project 81 of mine and it is kind of new to me because I haven't met anyone at all except from the locals I made friends with. So I'm grateful because it is not that bad and it is actually kind of I don't know unexplainable feeling. So happy and overwhelmed for this another experience I had.

The night has been so long on my stay in this camp. The food is great and of course I always try "sisig" on every provinces I visit and theirs are a must with a beer of course and a good conversation with one of the guest, Joey. You know that feeling when everything feels like home?

Me and Joey joined the local surfers who are enjoying some drinks and little chitchat with the foreigner traveler too. I got again mesmerize by their stories and how passionate they all are when it comes to surfing and helping the young ones through surfing. It is not all the time you get to know people with such passion as abundant as that. And from that moment on I know I fell in love with the place and told myself that I will support their camp in any possible way I can.

Taken almost sunset

I didn't get to try surfing. I leave next morning right away. But I plan on coming back and experience their wave.

We are very fortunate for giving special treatment from the locals of Mamburao Town in Occidental Mindoro. After a fun-filled and fulfilling previous day with the Turawan Community of Mangyan in Sablayan we decided to hit the sea and splash into some waters. After all, Mindoro are surrounded by body of waters.

Tayamaan Beach is located North-West of Mamburao. Its a long stretched of light brown to crystal color sand. There is no entrance fee but you can rent a nipa hut or picnic cottages that is present along the beach.

Maybe because there is no entrance fee and no one really owns the place, some parts of the beach has garbage already. No one maintains the beach but I think we should stop this kind of mentality, we ourselves need to be mindful of our trash wherever we go. But aside from that, the beach is friendly with kids, its shallow on the shore. There are some part where there are stones and some seaweeds. On the farthest side of the beach the sand became pristine sand unlike the sand near the dock where the sand is grayish that turns crystal when the sun is high. But the water is definitely clear here. Just be mindful of the boats that fishermen uses to catch fish, they disembark on some part of the beach but definitely not occupying the entire beach because really it is a long stretch of beach. How many times I've mentioned beach? :P

On the other side of the beach.

Since the other side is full of boats and fishermen I asked my friends to go to the farthest side where no boats disembarks and they agreed. As you walk towards the farthest side you can see the change in the sand from gray to light brown. And you can also see clearly that the island is really like the snout of the crocodile.

We spend most of our time here. There are no other people swimming except us. The water is clear but a little smelly because of the seaweeds but who are we to complain? It's their home anyway. And I just love how clean the water is.

It is not much popular to tourists and mostly locals are the one going in here so you can have it all to yourself. Just be mindful of our trash, please.

More photos below!

In love with coconuts!

Beware of some small jellyfish.

My visit on this unspoiled beach in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, dated March 30, 2017 is an official entry to my 81 Before 30 challenge.

 From Manila

Montenegro has a regular trip going to the island. Fare is around 260 (as of March 2017) and travel time may take up to 3 hours. Once in Abra De Ilog terminal, ride a van or bus (dimple star) and tell the driver you are heading to Mamburao terminal. Travel time is roughly around 2 hours. From Mamburao terminal, there is a tricycle there and tell them to bring you to Tayamaan Beach.
