This is somehow part two of my previous post "Cheap Accommodation In Siargao" but this time I'll make a guidelines on how you can spend less in Siargao.

I know whenever people will hear "Siargao" they will automatically think of how expensive this trip will be but like any other destinations, you can spend less here too. You just have to know if not all most about the place before heading there. But of course how? Especially if its your first time, right? And, if you are like me a solo traveler. I feel you guys. There are only few over the internet who can help you out with this one because I too had a hard time before. But let me help you with this post. I don't say I'm an expert about the island because it is just my first time there. But my ten days stay gives me a lot of ideas about the place.

So I listed nine points to remember when going to Siargao. This is just based on my experience and the way I see how one can spend less in this beautiful island. I'll update this once I remember some more points.

1. SET A BUDGET. During my planning stage of my Mindanao trip, I allotted 10 days for my Siargao trip. In my mind I know it will be costly but I set a budget for it. I've researched some spots that I want to visit and from there planned my budget for the trip. Setting a budget will help you monitor you expenses.

2. LOOK FOR CHEAP ACCOMMODATION. On my previous post I mentioned where I stayed. Choosing where to stay should be a priority too. You don't want to spend more on this because most likely you will be outside enjoying the island but don't just choose wherever or whatever accommodation there is. You should also consider not just the price but the distance and the benefits of staying there. Like on my part, I stayed at Paglaom Hostel. This place is perfect for any budget travelers out there. You will be going to sleep in a bunk but with mosquito nets (I think this is another plus), you can bring your own food and they have designated container and lockers (with lock) for your foods and drinks, you are allowed to use the kitchen and their refrigerator and any appliances in the kitchen, all these for a 350 per night. Such a steal right?

3. TRAVEL IN NUMBERS. This is the most cheapest way to travel in a place where you can split the expenses with others like boat rentals, car rentals, and of course on food consumption. But of course, there will be times that your friends will not be there or like me who really prefers travelling solo then point number four is four you.

4. MAKE FRIENDS. I honestly not the friendliest out there. I am a self-proclaimed introvert and in my three years of backpacking there is only one person whom I consistently have communication until now. Maybe because my itinerary is always on the go and spontaneous. I didn't expect that my Siargao trip would be this enormous about meeting new people but I'm glad it turned out to be that way because I really enjoyed every day with them. So, what happened was, from the hostel I checked in, I met people who are also solo traveler, and from there we discussed places we want to visit and just divide the total cost. This is way way a lot cheaper. The budget I set is just for the three island because the initial plan is just to visit those three on my own, renting my own boat. But the budget I set takes me to different spots in Siargao because yeah I made a lot of friends.

5. BE EXTRA FRIENDLY. How is this so different from point number four is that along the way or from where the jump off is, if you spot some couple or group of two or three friends, you can always ask them if they want to join your group and divide the total cost among yourselves. The many the better! Of course ask your boatman of the maximum capacity of the boat. This may also apply if you will rent a multicab for a day. Imagine if you can find more to fit in the multicab?

6. RESEARCH WHERE YOU WANT TO GO. Since it is just me alone I list just the places I wanted to visit and the food I want to try. From there I plan the budget and all.  Just read some other points for backup of this ^^

7. BRING/COOK YOUR OWN FOOD. As I've mentioned, look for an accommodation where you can bring and esp cook your own food. Eating fresh and newly cooked is always much better right? Siargao is just like any other places with their own wet and dry market. You can always ask locals where you can find them. I didn't say you should not try any food stalls or restaurant in the island, of course you have to because believe me there are loads to try and loads that is worth your dime. But again, control and set a budget for it. And if you are really on tight budget allot only to food stalls or restaurant you really want to try or heard of on that island. that is worth your bucks.

8. MONITOR YOUR EVERYDAY EXPENSES. Whenever I travel I list all my everyday expenses just to see how am I spending the whole day and when to limit or stop to avoid overbudget. By this you will have a total control on your money.

9. BRING JUST THE EXACT MONEY. I know this can be like a disadvantage esp if there's any emergency but what I did is I bring just the budget I planned and always had a backup but hid it away from my wallet and make a promise to myself not to touch it unless it is really really that important. After all, we are all promise-abiding citizen right?

Tips
- Paglaom Hostel accommodation is just 350 per night (you may bring your own food to cook, they have stove and refrigerator that you can use without any additional cost)
- You may rent a multicab all for yourself we had ours for only 2500 with a driver and split the expenses to eight of us)
- There are van rentals for a day for 2500 to 3500. Self drive and with a driver too.
- Habal-habal rental is 350 for a day. Max is 3 in habal-habal
- Bike rental is 150 for a day.
- Island Hopping to Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island is 1500 per boat, maximum is 8. But later on we found out that there are some who offers 1300 per boat. This is just around boulevard where they dock their boats. The store before it on the right side.
- Magpupungko Tidal Flats and Lagoon can be reached through land ride (habal, multicab, or van) if you rent a any of those for a day you can also visit the falls and the caves and pacifico.
- Sugba Lagoon can be reached through land and boat. This is a bit expensive so be sure to be with lots of friends and travelers to lessen the expenses. Boat rental is about 1600.
- Bucas Grande and Sohoton is really expensive so make sure to not go there alone. For a group of eight a total of 3500 to 5000 expenses.
- Their market price is the same as everywhere.
- Food stalls and restaurant to check out Mama's Grill, Shaka, Barrel, Kermit, Harana, Aventino's Pizza, Dawi's.
- Surf lesson is 500 for one hour with board. They offer day lesson for less or four hours of lesson for less just asked them they are all nice and accommodating. I suggest looking for "Oh Wow Surf" at Cloud 9

I was too stoked after my Davao Region trip last November 2016 where I learned a lot about surfing. When I got home the next weekend me and my best friend Jec head to Liwliwa in  Zambales to try the surfing spot there. It was my bf's birthday month and we haven't seen each other over a year so I am that eager to finally make this trip to happen.

The first choice is to go to Crystal beach. But we are in tight budget that time and I really don't want to bring my own tent since I brought it on my backpacking in Davao Region and my back still hurts for that. So the idea is to stay in Crystal Beach since they offer glamping as their accommodation and I really want to try that. But, since we are just inquiring two nights before and the beach got a lot of tourists every weekend their glamping accommodation are all reserved.

Because of the bad news, I immediately search for alternative place in Zambales. That's where I found out about Liwliwa. Really, Ellie? Just now? Yep! Just now. But it was all good. The first choice is The Circle Hostel. But we didn't book online or contact them ahead.

The Circle Hostel

Came Saturday and arriving at Liwliwa Zambales we learned that it is advisable to reserve online if you want to stay at The Circle Hostel especially during weekends for they have loads of guests during weekends. Can't blame them they're one of those hostel you need to try for yourself.

The receptionist at The Circle Hostel is kind enough to help us look for another accommodation. The one she refers is an airconditoned room few meters across their hostel. But I really prefer a rawness kind of accommodation that time and of course a cheaper one like that of the Circle Hostel.

We roam around the place since we arrive early morning and that we found out about this spot who manage by a siblings. Ate Donna who handles most of the transaction attend to our needs. We rent a tent to them and they set it up.

After setting it up. We change clothes and hit the beach and prepare for the wave. Jec was pretty confident that I should be the one teaching her basics but later on I insist  that she should get an instructor.

A brother of Ate Donna teach her the basic and after she gets the hang of it and pretty much get tired, Kuya (sorry I forgot the name) assist me on pushing me when there's a good wave. HAHA! Yepp, my sore arms is that bad for paddling.

We take our lunch and then doze off the entire afternoon inside our tent. When the sunset came we run to the beach and watch and admire it. That was one good sunset.

At night after eating light dinner, I kind of still feel tired over work, travel, and all that I just want to sleep the night off and I did. We met two campers too who set up their tent and hammock beside us.

There are still 2 remaining hours from the board we rented. So I said that if the wave permits we'll do one quick ride but it was flat. So me and Jec decided to leave early so we can go home early plus Jec's going home to Batangas and she's long way from home.

This quick getaway is one of my favorite on the list. All in one weekend that I love. Suf, camp, sleep, eat and just chill, plus the budget is too friendly the damage on our wallet is just less than 1500 pesos! Will do a travel guide for this.

Shaka!

Here's additional information on where to stay at Liwliwa. If you want a chill place to stay under starry night sky, you can check out Hide In. They are still new and on their soft opening. You can visit their facebook page to know more about them. Watch out for my next post about Hide In!

I can't believe I am publishing this just now given the love I have for this camp. I know, I have too many backlogs. I wrote this long before but haven't published yet and I really wanted to sum up my whole experience on this single post so pardon me if this will be more than a thousand words and there are loads to share plus I did add some new photos too. And seriously, I need to learn to come up with a shorter title. But this camp deserves more than that and I am struggling to come up with the best title (probably one of the main reason why I haven't published it yet before) but I think there is no better way to describe this place because really "home away from home" is the closest.

Have you ever had this feeling when you need to get away from something? (oh, no definitely not like you committed a crime or anything like that) That itchy feeling when you just want to distance yourself from the norms and just be succumbed in solidarity and still feels safe and secured but bad-ass and rawness is still present at the same time? Am I making sense? But actually I am. Because I found a place just exactly like that.

Last year, as I am determined to tick-off all the provinces in Bicol Region I came upon this eco-surf camp in Gubat, Sorsogon which I never imagined will be dear to me. The first visit came short because I had to stay overnight and need to head on to my next destination which is Masbate. That was the lamest move I did back then, but looking back, it made me realize that it just opens another possibility that I will be setting foot on that camp again.

I made a promise to myself that I will come back and experience more of what the camp has. My short visit of course did not stop me to know them and for them to make me feel wanted and at home.

This camp is far different to other beach I've been to. It's unspoiled, it's green, it's natural, it's as if you're in a place where everything feels so home and untouched. The place is clean, the foods are great, the people are all awesome, the beach is wide, the waves are so inviting, the dogs barks a little (sorry, funny memories from my first visit) it's a peaceful place where you can procrastinate and just succumb yourself to nature, really its a perfect getaway if you want to just forget about the busy metro and how suffocating living there is. The camp is a friendly and very welcoming and hospitable place, all the good traits Filipino has they have it. Trust me, for the last ten months that had passed, been there four times already and will keep going back there.

Kuya Noli, who’s the one consistently replying on my queries on their fb page is kind enough to fetch me from town proper to their camp. (I was exhausted from my trip from Catanduanes and just want to have enough sleep that day but since I have a list to visit and limited time on my end I did manage to visit some of the wonders of Sorsogon.)

I had a quick chitchat with Kuya Noli about the camp on our way there. That’s when I learned a brief account on how the camp was started and it’s really something inspirational.

Upon arrival at the camp, some surfers (I didn’t know back then) is kind enough to assist me and attending on my needs though I’m not accustomed to this kind of gestures because I clearly haven’t experienced much of this on my previous solo trip. But I am deeply grateful for that. My plan is to just sleep off the night in a tent for it is much cheaper, as you see, I travel on cheap budget only and stick on it. This is one of the first time that I cheat on my own plan HA! Reason is too personal :P

Anyway, as I came back from my quick exploration of Barcelona and Bulusan, I kind of feel tired and just want to sleep it off the whole night without engaging to any human species. There are times when I feel like that (most of the time actually). So, I grabbed my notebook and pen and proceed to the beach and sit on a spot far from anyone and continue my writing. But I was distracted by the waves and the beach and the dogs and the surfers and the locals and some other guests, distracted in a good way because it was a good sight. Really a good sight. Everything is just so alive. The last time I remember seeing something like this is my trip to Sagada which is of course far different from Sorsogon (except that they both start with letter S :P)

There are a lot of things going on inside my head that time like “Should I go surfing?” “Oh, there’s a skimboard, tatay bads would love it knowing I tried” “those couple surfers look so astonished riding the waves” “are these dogs mad for always following me?” “what am I writing anyway?” “what’s for dinner?” “should I eat now?” “I smell like a garbage who haven’t thrown in a week” “I should take a bath” “should I take a bath now?” “who are these people anyway?” “why there are a lot of men here?” “why I haven’t discovered this place long ago?” “I wanna live here” “can I live here?” “what time should I wake up tomorrow?” “Is Masbate safe?” “Should I continue my trip to Romblon after Masbate?“ “should I extend my trip?“ “are there beers in their kitchen?” “I wish there’s sisig” “I want to eat unli rice” “I’m so hungry and smells awful”

See? That’s loads and that’s all I can remember. So I close my notebook head back to my hut and prepare to take a shower and after that I immediately go straight on their kitchen and ask for food. Of course, sisig talaga una ko hinanap, and their menu did not disappoint me! Ha! Sisig, finally! And I did asked for beer, though and they do have. Yes!

The plan on not talking to any human species failed for this trip will never be memorable if that chitchats didn't happen. Ed was the one who cooked my meal that night. It was sumptuous! (Okay, I’m craving for sisig now) I never tried fish sisig before and that was the first. I am no fan of spicy food because my tolerance for that is too low, really too low, but the spiciness of their Sisig is tolerable, plus, I have a beer on my side so twice tolerable. (dance)

While waiting for my meal, Ed, make a little chitchat with me as Joey, one of their guest too, joined me. I learned how he got there, his work before, you know, the usual (I don’t know if that’s usual asking too personal question when you first met them, but in the camp it is definitely okay). Knowing how his life before makes me realize so many things that just magnified when I get to talked with other surfers too.

You see, I have this dilemma back then about my career, I’ve been struggling really hard about it and meeting this people makes me realize so many things and I know they don’t know this but they are one of those strangers you meet along the way that change your point of view (okay, not really change but pushed you and enlighten you because you already know what you want you are just too scared to do it feeling) and I am just glad to be on that  camp that night and to listen to their stories. But as I’ve said, I’m scared about jumping into unknown that time. So I keep in mind and in my heart their stories that is so inspirational and I know one day, I, too, can do that risk for myself.

Most of them, the surfers, has a regular work in Manila and all these they left and comes home and do the things they are passionate about which is surfing and they are wholeheartedly sharing it to everyone who visits the place. How beautiful it is knowing not just one but a couple of men pursuing their passion? And how most of us neglect the things we are most passionate about? I know most of you will not agree on me with this but this is what I believe in now. And that what makes me fall in love with this camp more. Not only they do what they are passionate about but they also help other people especially the young ones, the teens, to go to school and to study harder. They support the kids schooling by allowing them to teach surf lesson in the camp. And they nag them if they will not go to school. The community they have is a Family everyone of us should have. Supporting and encouraging each and every one to do not just the right thing but also humane.

The camp being as an eco-surf camp has rules and regulations they strictly implementing. These what comprises a good community, putting rules and strictly enforcing it. And I think we need more camp and resorts like this, after all, this rules they have are good to our environment.

Listening about their stories and how this camp was established and started is truly admirable. And I can’t believe I am just staying for a night! I really wanted to stay, I really do, but I already break some rules for myself on this trip and as hard as it feels I bid goodbye to them the next day and promise to come back and will stay for long.

Photo taken during my December visit

Learning about their yearly activity that took place every October: “Swellfest” I immediately asked my friends to accompany me back to the camp for I want to help the camp in any way possible and I want to share to my bestfriends the experience I had. Three of my friends accompanied me and I know they had a blast too. It was my first time to experience an event like that and it is overwhelming, really. I am no fan of crowd but despite that I enjoyed it and I met new sets of friends, that’s new to me. HA! But of course, when you want to enjoy and experience the camp I suggest on going on weekdays and without event, I don’t know, I am just not a fan of crowds, you get to enjoy the place, it’s like living there as a local. And I did come back again last December after their swellfest.

During swellfest

Again, I am having this dilemma at work and just need to get out and I don’t know its just that the camp gives me this sense of peacefulness for being alone but not literally. BASTA! Can’t explain, e. The camp has been my refuge everytime I feel uncertain on something and as their saying goes "if nothing is going well...run to granny's place" and that is exactly what I did. I run to the camp last December of 2017 and contemplate everything about what is going on with my life and where I want to be and what I really want to do.

I am grateful for the experience I had in the camp. My every visit is unique and unforgettable. It’s like experiencing the camp for the first time. Their hospitality and their community makes you really feel welcome and at home. No dull moments just pure fun and happiness. They know what they lacks of and they are trying to make up for it, they know we all have our struggles because they have too but they are all smiling it off and just live one day at a time without too much dwelling on the future and all the unknowns that hasn’t yet to come. Being there is like living to the fullest one day at a time.

I really wanted to share this to everyone but I’m kind of selfish to my favorite spots because people tend to visit it and more and more and it became crowded, I know, I am being selfish, but I know their camp will be known and I just hope as it gets popularity all over the world, the camp will remain as I’ve known them the rawness, the simplicity and the countryside vibe of the place that I fell in love with.

It is definitely a home away from home, from the camp itself, to the richness of their food, to the strong brave waves on their sea, to their dogs, and of course to the locals, the surfers and every one in their community making the camp feels home to every one who visits it and turns strangers into family.

I hope one day, our country will be filled with so much camp and resorts like this who are environmentally friendly and is not after your money because all they want is for you to have fun and enjoy the camp, the food, and most especially the wave.

Stay stoked!
